How does it work?

Natural Swimming Pools are a beautiful way to enjoy swimming in fresh, living water. By recreating the symbiotic relationship between plants and water, these pools naturally aerate and circulate just like streams and lakes in the wild. Harnessing the filtration power of aquatic plants, they create crystal-clear water so pure it can even support fish—bringing the essence of a serene lake right to your backyard.

There are 3 main components to our pools:

1) The Regeneration area - this is where your pool water gets filtered and cleaned using a combination of plants and special rocks (aggregate.) The regeneration area can be attached to your main swimming area, or it can be built out separately and connected by a stream & waterfall feature.

2) The Waterfall feature - this is where water from the Regeneration area flows back into the swimming area. While it’s a typical piece of the configuration of an unattached Regeneration area, we can easily add them to any pool set up - even if you want your regeneration area to be attached.

3) Swimming area - your custom oasis, this is where the fun is had! We can customize the shape, size, and depth of your swimming pool.

Pool Types

Attached Regeneration Area

If you love the crisp, clean look of a traditional pool, you can still enjoy the benefits of a natural system by keeping the regeneration zone separate from the main swimming area. Water flows from the pool into the regeneration zone, where it’s naturally filtered and returned—often by way of a beautiful waterfall feature that aerates the water and enhances your space. The regeneration area can be designed as a tranquil pond, a lush border of plants, or a network of streams and water features surrounding your living area. With this option, your outdoor space can be as unique as your imagination.

Classic Natural Swimming Pools combine a deep swimming area with a shallow regeneration zone, all within one seamless body of water. The shallow area is home to aquatic plants that naturally filter and refresh the water, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem. Designed to blend effortlessly with the landscape, this is the most natural-looking option, reflecting the beauty of nature in every detail.

Design & Construction Process

The process begins by turning your vision for an outdoor oasis into reality—starting with pen on paper. From sketches and stone samples to a detailed 3D AutoCAD model, our design team brings all the pieces together to create a natural swimming pond that’s uniquely yours.

We balance what’s achievable today with your long-term goals, ensuring every element is thoughtfully placed and built in the right order. This careful planning guarantees a pond that is as beautiful and functional as you’ve imagined, without costly surprises down the line.

Phase 1: Plan, Design, Budget & Permits

This is where the physical work begins! The ground is cleared, and the pool’s outline is carefully marked with chalk and string before excavation starts. Our team then begins digging, shaping the contours of the deep and shallow areas according to your design. This is when your natural swimming pond truly starts to take form, with every curve and edge carefully carved into the landscape to match the plan.

Phase 2: Survey Layout & Excavation

The crucial hidden heartbeat of every successful ecosystem, an underground network of pumps and piping ensure your water is properly circulated, aerated, and sized to create the water feature you desire. If space is an issue, extra filtration can be added to minimize the area needed for your regeneration zone.

Phase 3: Plumbing, Pumps & Filtration

These liners are heavy and costly, and proper installation is critical. Any time two edges are joined, there’s a risk of leaks that can lead to erosion or damage below grade. Careful handling and expert installation help prevent these issues, ensuring your pond remains durable and trouble-free for years to come.

Phase 4: Liner Installation

Phase 5: Pool Bottom & Interior Wall Construction

Sand, wood, tile, stone, concrete, or exposed liner—the possibilities are endless to bring your vision to life. You can mix and match materials to create the perfect aesthetic, from natural, rustic textures to sleek, modern finishes. Every edge, step, and feature can be tailored to suit your style, ensuring your natural swimming pond is truly one-of-a-kind.

Depending on the size of your pond and site access, crane trucks are used to carefully position large boulders and slabs, creating natural edging, elevation, and waterfalls. As tonnes of gravel or river rock are added to cover and protect the exposed pond liners, the shape of your dream pond begins to take real form, with every feature coming together as planned.

Phase 6: Rock Placement & Aggregate Fill

Phase 7: Decking, Final Landscaping & Planting

The final step brings your pond to life. We source local aquatic plants—like cattails and lilies—for natural filtration and aesthetic balance, and we can build a custom deck to create the perfect space to relax and enjoy your pond. From design to finishing touches, we work alongside you to ensure every detail reflects your vision, welcoming your input and expertise along the way.
